Full course description

Welcome to Kamehameha Schools Preschools (KSP) Kaʻaikuahiwi online papa (course) 3.3 Nā Mākau Kino: Developing Skill Sets, the third of four papa in ʻAha ʻEkolu - E Pāʻani Kākou: Learning Through Play. In this papa kumu will explore the connection between play-based learning and the physical development of keiki, with a focus on gross and fine motor skills. Through the lens of Hawaiian Culture-Based Education, kumu will identify hana kuʻuna, traditional practices (e.g. gathering, building, hula, weaving) that our kūpuna engaged in as a part of daily life and learn how these practices can be adapted into meaningful, developmentally appropriate play experiences. Kumu will reflect on how culturally grounded play supports keiki at various ability levels, enhances physical growth, and nurtures a strong sense of identity and  belonging. By exploring their own learning environment and planning intentional HCBE play-based experiences, kumu will gain confidence in integrating Hawaiian values, traditions, and practices into learning.
